Overview
IThe Gainesville Roller Rebels(GRR) roller derby team was using an inefficient method of organizing information about events, training resources, and important documents. As a result, new league members often found it difficult to find resources and integrate into the team.
My solution was to create an app that takes the most important info rookies need to know and organizes it. The app also features a mentor match section where rookies can connect with veteran players and message with them. Through interviews and user testing, I identified areas of importance and decided to organize the app by: important league documents, video resources, mentor match + chat, skills tracker, and added a calendar to the home page.

Identifying the Problem
I spoke to the President of GRR and the New Skater Coordinator to find out:
What the main issues are for rookies from their perspectives.
What they wish the league could do to help rookies feel like they belong in GRR.
President Clea DuBrawl said:
Building out support for yellow and green rookies to match the new skater set up
Mentorship, especially for those will poor skills after NSP and introverts
Making resources more accessible to those that are tech averse
New Skater Coordinator Bash the Stampede said:
More social events outside of practice would be beneficial
More established league members attending new skater practices and signing up to be a mentor will help integrate new skaters.
Based on this information and my own experiences as a new skater/rookie, I decided to make an app to help rookies transition into the league. It would acheive this by making the written and video resources more obvious and facilitating mentorship communication.
PROCESS
Deciding What’s Important
The current GRR communications consists of 17 active slack channels and a robust google drive, both of which are overwhelming to look at. Its difficult for rookies to tell what is relevant to them and what they can disregard while they get their bearings.
I identified the most relevant information for rookies:
The calendar that includes practices, bouts, and social events
The training video resources
The rookie skills checklists
And the dues/membership status sheet
