Overview
Bottle Models is a photo book that uses curated and candid photographs of reusable water bottles and contextualizes them with information and thoughts about self expression, sustainability, and trend cycles.
This book is available in digital form HERE.
Process
Research
I started by creating a moodboard for the style of image I wanted to create as well as researching water bottle sustainability information and bottle trends through time.
Photo editing
I shot RAW images and used Photoshop to edit them. I wanted to play with color and lighting, as well as give the pictures an editorial feel.
Layout
Designing the publication itself was challenging because I wanted to make it visually interesting. In the end I decided to go with a very simple layout because it allows the photographs to stand out rather than being lost in design elements.
I also decided to keep typography simple. I used Searchlight for the cover type, Playfair Display for the headings, and Raleway for the body.
Photography
Prior to this project I had very little experience with proper cameras or photography in general so I had to learn while doing. I decided to do a mix of studio curated photos along with “candids” of bottle I found in my every day life.
Writing
The writing portion of this project is not meant to distract from the images, just to add context. As a result I kept the passages short and informative. Some of the writing is my own observations, and some is my interpretation of statistics and sustainability research that has been done on the topic.
